Artist's Statement

My work is about my expression and reaction to the subject.  It is those things that catch my eyes - perhaps the light, more often the shadows and value changes of a place; maybe it is just a feeling the place or moment gives.  All those things and more give me the desire and need to paint it.

Painting is an art of time and space. It shows a special moment of a subject which may change or disappear in a short moment.  But that moment and the feeling of an artist towards it will exist in the form of art for a long time.  My hope is that my paintings bring a connection to the viewer – be it the expression that I try to capture; a link to a certain moment of his/her life; or a reminder of appreciation of the natural world around us.

About the Artist:

As an artist,  I like to use my direct observation to capture the beauty of an object and express it in some subjective format.

Unlike some artists who started drawing or painting when they were five or six, my natural artistic energies developed quite late.  However, I was fortunate to grow up in a family of artistic expression.  My father dedicated his whole life in his career as a movie set director and costume designer.  He was a great artist in his own right.  Throughout my childhood I remembered when he worked on the set he was respectfully addressed as "master" at the movie studio.   Reflecting on this years later,  I realize that the passion and hard work that I saw in my dad has quietly influenced my own artistic skills and habits.

My yearn for artistic expressions first emerged through my engagement in various dance forms in performing arts.   However, it was after my first encounter in oil paintings that I fell instantly in love with this traditional art form.  I now work exclusively in traditional oils.  People like to say one who paints is "talented".  I do not fully agree with this.  I believe that almost everybody can paint.  But to paint well requires much hard work, dedication and a strong will in the act of creating.

Until recently, Southern California was my home, but I now reside in the Houston, Texas area.  I am excited to explore my art life in a new environment.
